And so to the Deep South

It was an enjoyable CLOG autumn away-break. The weather, whilst not at its best, provided us with interesting challenges - wind, rain and clouds. We managed to see a lot of the attractive landscape around Patterdale, and a return visit to the Lakes certainly should be considered.

We all had different trains and routes back to the south, depending on our initial travel arrangements. For those with reasonably light baggage and an appropriately timed train, a walk from Pooley Bridge to Penrith Station was on the cards. For Lesley and Melissa, careful planning for their return was necessary to accommodate the ailing battery on Lesley's car.

Mat and I aimed for a midday train. A seat on the right hand side of the bus to Penrith ensured good farewell views across Ullswater to Place Fell and back to Patterdale. The pictures on this page were, of course, taken on Monday but give a flavour of the scenery presented, more-or-less free of charge, to the passenger. I thought, therefore it would be appropriate to repeat these pictures in my departing epistle.

Our visit - as intended - emphasised the golds and browns of autumn in the Lakes, as this view towards Boredale Hause on the way to Place Fell nicely brings out.




As the bus speeds on its way, this scene back towards Patterdale and the Oxford Crag comes into view - sailing boats and all.
